Why learn a new language?

Hello and Namaste to all!

Learning a new language is definitely an asset in a world that is so interconnected as ours. Globalisation and the expansion of communication has made it possible for us to interact with people who live on the other side of our planet in no time and with no significant effort. Hence, being able to communicate smoothly with each other has become not only a talent but a necessity too. Therefore, I would like to suggest 5 reasons to learn a new language.
  1. Learning a new language can give you a competitive edge in finding a job. Being multilingual can definitely impress employers as most companies nowadays are multinationals. Not just in the private sector but also in the public sector, being able to communicate skilfully with foreign diplomats or colleagues can be a priceless asset to have. It looks pretty good on your CV as it is an addition to the skills and knowledge you already possess.
  2. Learn a new language simply for enjoyment! You don't need to do it just because you HAVE to. You can do it just because you WANT to! You may just enjoy learning new languages like I do! After all, learning keeps one feeling young...
  3. If you are a travel enthusiast like I am, then you may enjoy learning a new language because it enables us to learn about new and different cultures and lifestyles. Learning a new language can be a window to a new and different experience.
  4. Learning a new language can help make new friends because it improves our communication skills. It is obvious that the more languages you know, the more people you can communicate with and hence that may lead to you making more new friends.
  5. It can prove useful for unforeseen future situations. Especially so if you plan on travelling a lot in the future such as maybe going on a holiday abroad or if you are thinking of working abroad. The opportunities are endless...
Now you may be thinking why there is so much talk about learning a new language all of a sudden. My inspiration arises from a Spanish language course that I attended recently. It was an intensive course at my university. The course was for beginners because I don't have any prior knowledge of Spanish. To be honest with you, before I went to my first class, it was just some activity that I felt I needed to do this summer. However, by the end of the course, I felt so refreshed and full of positivity! I am so glad that I did this course! I admit that it was quite challenging and sometimes I felt I was a bit behind in class, nonetheless, I enjoyed it. Unlike in my other courses, my aim for this course was not to excel in it but to simply enjoy it. And I did! I also met some really nice people! I couldn't have asked for anything more from this course.

This was not the first time that I had joined a beginners language course. I have enjoyed myself each and every time, and have been left with a sweet and insightful memory. Hence, I urge everyone to take a leap of faith and learn a new language. It will be totally worth it!

I hope reading this blog post has prompted you guys to maybe at least think about learning a new language.

Keep smiling and don't ever stop learning! :)

Ambika.
